Paying too much attention leads to over analysis and slowing the game down. I've found plenty of interaction and tension with 3 and 4 without the need to add more. One of the cool aspects is pulling off combos, but if you can be interrupted mid-way through then there will be more blocking maneuvers, fewer combos, and less fun.

Success is the accumulation of small victories. A few points here, a few points there, and so on. That's what kind of game it is. Small regions give small base points but can be filled earlier and get bonus points; large legions give large base points but take longer and get fewer bonus points.
