Theme is important to me, and I think Castles of Burgundy is a hair's breadth away from pure abstract.
That's not an inaccurate assessment but I would certainly not go so far as to say it is abstract. For whatever reason I am just not a big fan of abstract games - my wife loves Qwirkle and Rummikub but I can never get into them. Nonetheless, this is one of my absolute favorite games because while the theme is very light, it is at least still attempted.
