Theme is important to me, and I think Castles of Burgundy is a hair's breadth away from pure abstract. I think the marketing copy ("develop your Burgundy estate" etc.) is a little misleading.
I also agree that the graphic design could have been better.
However, there's no denying that it is a very good game, especially as it scales well for two players, can be played in 60 minutes or so and is medium weight.
