I can believe that animals are too risky to pursue in 2-player games. If you do not know from the start which tiles will be in the game, then you might be proceeding down a path which never pays off whereas other paths can be pursued with confidence.

I treat Castles of Burgundy as precisely a 4-player game for this reason. I know others disagree and disagree vehemently.
