I've only played once, but I'm questioning the value of the 4pts per animal type tile. It kind of flies in the face of building the same animal tiles to get the cumulative points. It feels more to me like a tile you might grab at the end of the game if your fields are a bit of a mess and not a "must get" if it come out early.

Yup it's quite valid. It based on the timing when that tile comes out. If it's in the early turn, then all you have to do is adjust your pastures strategy or even ignore it (this could lead to a chance that other player will get it). You should notice your estate layout. If the pasture regions are spreading in small regions, well you might want to grab the tile, since the accumulative animal points wouldn't work out. But, if you have 2 major regions of pastures, you might still want to grab it. I noticed that it's hard and sometimes luck to have animal tiles you really needed, so it's more than enough to have 1 region with accumulative points (1 type of animal) and random animal tiles in the other region, this way you get both of accumulative and bonus points for variety.

Well, you can think it that way... :)
Thanks.

Agreed on almost all points! I don't think I'd adjust pasture strategy If it came out early unless I had small pastures. The cumulative scoring is really much stronger than this tile if you can pull it off. However, it does seem a reasonable value to block someone else out of it. Even if you aren't trying to take advantage of it, it is likely 8 pts for you, so not a bad deal when denying someone else 16.

Indeed, blocking is very possible. One time, my girl block me by getting the castle tile (I need 1 more to complete it and she already completed the castle before). I was so surprised by this, since in previous games I never think this game as a direct conflict game. It's a pain in the ass there, but nevertheless it's still legal. :D
