Second, and more importantly, you can now see what your opponents are trying to do that round and can take action to slow them down or to block them entirely. Currently it is very difficult to do this... ...points that would be harder to get if the other players could see it coming and take remedial action, if they so choose...

But if your combinations are being blocked off, then people are paying attention and are trying to stop you from doing things - which is good! Right now it's a bit too easy to pull of combos that score big - and everyone gets their combos, which means the net result is small. If you can sneak one in I'd imagine the achievement will be more satisfying.

I disagree with the concept that combinations being blocked is automatically good and preferable. It's clear from these quotes that your feeling is that there should be more player conflict and interaction in Castles of Burgundy but I think if that is what you are looking for then this is not the game for you. Personally, what I enjoy most about this game is exactly what you described in the beginning of your review...

I think the game is quite elegant, a sentiment that many share. It's a tranquil Euro game. You take stuff, you build stuff with it, and you score points for the stuff you build in different ways.

I'm actually not a big Feld fan or a fan of point-salad games generally but I really like the tranquil elegance of combo building in Castles of Burgundy without the added tension of more blocking or conflict.
