We'd been having trouble finding a chance to play The Castles of Burgundy, which I've borrowed from Christy for the express purpose of playing with my husband, we finally got a chance to play last night. I had been pretty sure it wasn't going to work so well - Castles of Burgundy is a big step up in 'fiddly little rules' factor from the games he normally likes, plus he had a headache last night. I offered to put the game off to another night, but he said he wanted to go ahead and play. And the rules explanation didn't go so well - the headache made him have to stop me & re-explain even really simple things, like the mines, a couple of times. I was SURE this wasn't going to work out when he pretty much scowled through the first phase.
But then something started to click. I had started out showing him some of the different moves he could do with his dice, but by the end of the first year, he was finding more interesting moves on his own. By the end, he had caught on to everything, beat me by 12 points, and - believe it or not - told me I should go ahead and buy this one so we can play it again soon! Wow!! :D
