What have I played this week?
18/03/14: Super 5 (x2)
We started the week with two games of Super 5 with three players. This is a game that I picked up last week, and have quite enjoyed. It's a lot more cut-throat than the other light card games that we tend to play. I managed one win, while Ginge managed the second.
18/03/14: UNO
We moved on to a quick round of uno, played with individual scoring to 300. We needed to keep things short as we were planning to watch the Chelsea game. Ginge started well, but then had two terrible games, handing me the game.

18/03/14: PerigonFirst Play: Game
So we tried Perigon for the first time this week, which is a two player abstract game from a small publisher, Clarendon Games. The components were really high quality, and the gameplay seemed to be quite unique. The game started with both of us squaring our pieces up in the middle of the board, I tried to take the flag one way, but Ginge took it across to the other side, he eventually overpowered my pieces in the corner of the board to win the game. I can't say that I've figured out all of the strategy of the game, but I like the general feel to the game. I thought that it was surprising to see just how far the flag could move in a single turn; I think that allowing players to take two actions a turn allows for a much deeper strategy, similar to TZAAR. Pushing your own pieces seems to be a strong move also, as it saves moves later in the game. First impressions of the game are really quite positive.
19/03/14: The Castles of Burgundy
We started our games night by playing Castles of Burgundy with three. I prefer to play this game with four, as you can guarantee that every tile will be available at some point; however the game scales well at any number. The way that I usually play, is to try and stay as first player until I can grab the technology tile that gives three points for each type of shipped goods, it's usually an easy 18 points. I was first player on rounds B, C and D, Matt jumped ahead on round E just as the technology tile that I wanted turned up. I thought that I had lost at this point, however I managed to fill all but the technology spaces on the board, which gave me 24 points at the end of the game for bonus tiles; Keeping me ahead at the end of the Game. Bobby struggled to keep up after around round C, however Matt and I have played this game a fair few times; making it much easier to see the synergies between different tiles.

19/03/14: Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer / Ascension: Return of the Fallen
We played with the first two sets of Ascension, with four players. Bobby had a strategy that I was certain would be unsuccessful; he planned to pick up only heavy infantry and Void removal, and go for attack only. Then he killed Samael the Fallen early in the game and flooded his deck with creatures. Matt was sat to his right, and was going for constructs, Gaz was going for Lifebound and Enlightened card draw. I tried to do a bit of everything, and ended up not specialising, leaving me in last place. Bobby surprised everyone, when he won the game without picking up a single Mystic; I honestly did not believe that it was possible. He also managed 20 points in gems in his last turn of the game.

22/03/14: Super 5
We started our evening with a five player game of Super 5, which I think is the best number to play with. There isn't a great deal of skill in this game, but it's a nice warm up filler game to start the evening. Ginge looked to be ahead, but lost four lives in a single round. The game ended with a stand off between Bobby and myself, however I was able to win the game using a series of 'skip' cards.
22/03/14: Ascension: Storm of Souls / Ascension: Immortal Heroes
We played another game of Ascension, this time using the second cycle of cards. Bobby wanted to try his 'no mystics' strategy again, that had been successful earlier in the week, however he was left killing cultists every turn. Andy had a more balanced deck, that again was focused on attacking. Ginge went for all out constructs, and managed to ditch many of his unwanted cards to the dreamers glass, however he was victim to the Acidic slime twice in the game, slowing him right down. I started the game with Void removal and Lifebound unite cards, then I moved into constructs; I managed to get both Orb of Nyx and Kythis, and started scoring big late game. I ended up getting four or five soul gems a turn to win the game comfortably.

22/03/14: Principato
Next we played another new addition to my collection, Principato. When we had played this the previous week, most of the players spent too much time focussing on military victory, and neglected the other ways of scoring. This game was much more balanced. Ginge crafted six catapults, which was enough to win the majority of military rounds, but he missed out on bonus tiles. Bobby created an efficient gold producing engine, and produced large quantities of paintings. Andy was trying to create all three types of bonus tiles, and managed three sculptures and three paintings. Unfortunately, he could not acquire a writer, and missed out on his secret mission. I tried to balance military and bonus tiles, and ended up with a full set of three sculptures and literature for my secret mission, edging me ahead at the end of the game.

What have I bought this week?
- Raiders of the Lost Tomb
Another $3 pay-what-you-want micro game. This looks like an interesting little game that plays with coins, I'm willing to take the risk for the price too.
