Placing a boat results in you moving your token along the ship track to the right.

The first player in each round is the player whose token is furthest to the right on the ship track (or on top of the stack furthest to the right).

Play order proceeds with the next-furthest token to the right and so on.

Playing a boat should never worsen your turn order.

ok, we've been playing it wrong, playing Boat gives you Trade goods and moving you towards being starting player.

we've been playing it like: you get trade goods and move you farther away from being starting player :D

Well at least you will get it right from now on. Several of Feld's games have this mechanism, so if you intend to play more of his games you should get it right.
