Neither of these games have faded away. Both of them still have huge numbers of fans and they continue to stand up to the best designs of today.
The thing is, the ratings for just about every game slowly decrease over time. There's a variety of reasons for this, including more people rating it who aren't predisposed to like it (the ones who fit that profile gave the game its earliest ratings). But it's a consistent phenomena. It will eventually happen with Castles of Burgundy, too. But the reason it's so highly rated is because people love it. As others have said, you need to be tolerant of the fact that it's practically all mechanics and very little theme. But if that doesn't bother you, it's an excellent game.
